Through our signature National Backpack Program, now in its eighth year, the Office Depot Foundation places new backpacks into the hands of children who might not otherwise have the proper tools for success. Prior to the start of the new school year, backpacks are donated to charitable organizations and schools on behalf of every Office Depot store in the United States and Canada. Since the program's inception, nearly 1.5 million backpacks have been given to deserving children. We often hear how these new backpacks help boost children's self-esteem, confidence and pride.
In 2008 - for the fourth consecutive year - 300,000 backpacks will be donated. Special backpack presentation events are being planned for several South Florida cities - Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Delray Beach/Boca Raton and West Palm Beach - as well as a number of other cities across the United States and Canada. In addition, the Office Depot Foundation will distribute backpacks through partnerships with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Communities In Schools, Feed The Children, the Kids In Need Foundation and the National Foundation for Women Legislators.
The Foundation is unable to accept requests for backpacks from individual organizations and schools this year.

The Office Depot Foundation launched its 2007 National Backpack Program on August 8 with special "Backpack Donation Day" events in five Florida cities: Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando. Together, more than 23,000 backpacks were donated to approximately 75 non-profit organizations, schools and other programs serving children in South and Central Florida.
Through the 2007 National Backpack Program, the Office Depot Foundation donated 300,000 backpacks across the U.S. and Canada. The recipients, in turn, provided the backpacks to deserving children whom they serve through their programs or in their classrooms.
The Office Depot Foundation hosted special "Backpack Donation Day" events in more than 25 cities. Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series and Ambassador for Youth for National PTA, participated in events in Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Kansas City. "I understand how important it is to have the right tools for success - whether your goal is winning a NASCAR race or doing well in the classroom," Edwards said. "These backpacks and supplies from the Office Depot Foundation will clearly help kids who need an extra boost to succeed in school."
